Seven Summers by Paige Toon Review

Whilst on holiday I read my final summer themed book of the year. Seven Summers is one I saw all over my TikTok and I hadn't seen one negative review. That was enough to convince me to choose it as my holiday read. It also helps that Amazon were selling it for only £4.50! I've not read as many romance novels this year as I typically do, so I was excited to dive back into a cutesy little love story. If you want to know what I thought of it, keep reading.

Synopsis:

Liv and Finn meet six summers ago working in a bar on the rugged Cornish coastline, their futures full of promise. When a night of passion ends in devastating tragedy they are bound together inextricably. But Finn’s life is in LA with his band, and Liv’s is in Cornwall with her family—so they make a promise. Finn will return every year, and if they are single they will spend the summer together.

This summer Liv crosses paths with Tom—a mysterious new arrival in her hometown. As the wildflowers and heather come into bloom, they find themselves falling for one another. For the first time Liv can imagine a world where her heart isn’t broken every autumn. Now Liv must make an impossible choice. And when she discovers the shocking reason that Tom has left home, she’ll need to trust her heart even more . . .

My Review

My first impression of this book before even starting it was how pretty the cover is. I'm that person who will know nothing about a book and buy it just because it looks cute. I had never read a Paige Toon book before so I had no idea what to expect in terms of writing, but I was extremely drawn to the cover.

The story follows Liv's POV and is structured in a way that shows a present timeline and past timeline to previous summers. This made it really easy to follow and engaging to read. I liked the varied lengths of chapters and how it showed her summers with Finn vs Tom. This book includes a love triangle, so if you enjoy that trope, this is one for you. It also features themes of grief, loss and change. I thought Toon handled this quite well and showed the reality of how grief can completely alter your life path and decisions.

I also liked the small town romance element of the novel. The writer's descriptions made it so easy to imagine the setting and the relationships between the characters. I will say, I definitely gravitated more towards one guy than the other. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say WHO I preferred. However, I will say I wasn't the biggest fan of how the book concluded and who she ended up with. Had it been up to me, it would have ended very differently.

Like I said in my introduction, I hadn't seen a single negative review about this book beforehand; however, I didn't really have much expectations for it. I tend to go into romance novels with a love triangle, with as little expectations as possible, as there is always a chance it won't go the way you want it to. I think because of that, although the ending wasn't my preference, I still had a positive reading experience.

Overall, I thought it was an enjoyable read and worth picking up if you want a filler or something to get you out of a slump. It wasn't anything life changing, but still one I'd recommend if you want something easy and fast paced.

I gave this book 3.75 out of 5 stars ★★★

Have you read Seven Summers, and did it end the way you wanted it to? Let me know in the comments.
